Veitch Organizes Clean Up Of Forgotten City Landmark

Cady Family Cemetery neglected as early as 1878

SARATOGA SPRINGS-Matthew Veitch, candidate for Supervisor of Saratoga Springs, was joined today by fellow members of the Southwest Neighborhood Association as they cleaned up the Cady Family Cemetery.  The graveyard, which is located just west of Cady Hill off of Geyser Road, is one of a handful of cemeteries in the city that tell the story of Saratoga Springs’ early residents.  Unlike some of the others, Cady Hill is relatively unknown.

“As part of a family with deep roots here in Saratoga, I understand the importance of preserving our history and helping to tell many of the stories of the city’ early days,” said Veitch.  “Being a trustee of the History Museum has given me an even greater appreciation of the past eras.  My neighbors and I are honored to help out and we take great pride in preserving this cemetery right here in our backyards."

The cemetery, which gave its name to Cady Hill, Mary Lou Whitney’s estate, has become sadly overgrown and the fence is in dire need of repair.  Nathaniel Bartlett
Sylvester's "History of Saratoga County", which was written in 1878, even mentions that the cemetery suffered then from neglect.  Currently, briars and wild shrubs have grown, trying to expel the vibrant roses that had been planted years ago by loving hands.

“Over 200 years ago, this site was used as a final resting place for some of the city’s first residents,” added Veitch.  “My friends and I here today feel a sense of duty and ownership of this historical landmark.”
